Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that there are more than 35 crore Bengali and Bengali speaking people in the world right now. From that position, our goal this time is to establish Bengali as the official language of the United Nations.

Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman decided to observe 21st February as protest day while sitting in jail. Because on that 21st February, our forefathers laid claim to mother tongue with their lives. After this, with the prompt decision led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the initiative of two Bengali expatriates in Canada, Salam-Rafiq, in view of sending a proposal to the United Nations on behalf of the state, February 21 has been anointed as International Mother Language Day.

He said that the recognition of Bengali as an international language is a huge achievement for a nation in the international arena. Today our dream is to convert Bengali into an official language of the United Nations.

He also said that there are more than 35 crore Bengali speakers all over the world. Therefore, Bengali language is one of the most common languages in the world. That is why we would like to establish Bangla as the official language of the United Nations.
