Bangladesh is self-sufficient in food today: Speaker

 

Speaker of the National Parliament. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said that Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Farmers are the main driving force of an agrarian economy. Today, Bangladesh is self-sufficient in food through the collective efforts of farmers under the guidance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He said these things at a function organized by the upazila administration and agriculture extension department at the Pirganj upazila parishad auditorium of his constituency Rangpur-6 on Saturday.

The Family Nutrition Garden Exhibition was inaugurated on the occasion of Mujib Centenary under the Family Nutrition Garden Scheme (First Revised) on uncultivated fallow land and homestead courtyards.

The speaker said that agriculture should be advanced by using the knowledge of modern technology in the modernization of agriculture. Integrated agriculture should be encouraged by imparting training in modern agriculture under the initiative of agriculture department.

He said that the inclusive development of farmers has been facilitated through the banking facility of farmers at 10 rupees. Agriculture department should play a responsible role in marketing of agricultural products by creating awareness among the farmers.

At this time, 403 beneficiaries of 15 unions and one municipality were given high-yielding vegetable hybrids of bitter gourd, sweet pumpkin, gourd, puishak, barbati, spinach, kale, chichinga, brinjal and coriander seeds along with 1.50% land per capita. Seedlings are distributed.

At this time, he urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to eliminate discrimination against women farmers. The Speaker said that various programs will be continued to advance half of the total population of the country under the initiative of the upazila administration
