Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasized the need for greater participation of women in science for an equitable, inclusive and sustainable future.
We must have the right policies and institutions in place for young women to choose careers in science and technology, she said.
Sheikh Hasina said this in a video statement broadcast on the 9th International Women’s and Girls’ Day at the science conference held in New York on Saturday.
The Prime Minister said it is important to promote women to leadership positions in science. In Bangladesh I am personally committed to advancing the work of our women scientists through recognition and encouragement.
Expressing her greetings to all who participated in the gathering, Sheikh Hasina said, I congratulate all the women engaged in research and innovation in finding solutions to the challenges our world is facing. We need more women and girls in science.
He also said that his government is digitally empowering thousands of women and girls across the country. I am delighted to see their vibrant presence in the digital marketplace. We provide the necessary training to help young women grow as IT freelancers.
The Prime Minister wants to make a difference in the lives of disabled girls in her country through digital inclusion. He said our government is promoting technical and vocational education to help women build a future of work. We have made science and ICT education compulsory for all high school students.
The Prime Minister also said that in the past, the number of female students in higher education, especially in science and technology, was not satisfactory. But now, as a result of our concerted efforts, women’s participation in science education has increased significantly in recent years.
He said that about 40 percent of the total students in Bangladesh’s public universities are women, while their percentage in private universities is 30 percent.
