The fire in the sugar warehouse was not extinguished even after 18 hours

18 hours after the fire broke out at S. Alam Group’s unrefined sugar warehouse on the banks of the Karnaphuli in Chittagong, it was not fully extinguished.

A fire broke out in one of the four warehouses of S Alam Refined Sugar Mill in the Ichapur area of the Karnaphuli police station earlier on Monday, before 4 p.m..

15 units of the fire service brought the fire under control around 10:30 p.m. after about six and a half hours of effort.

Abdul Malek, Assistant Director of Agrabad Fire Service, told the media at 10 a.m. on Tuesday that the warehouse fire was under control but not completely extinguished. The personnel of our various units are trying to extinguish the fire. Besides, water is being sprinkled there by a robotic firefighting system.

S Alam Refined Sugar Mill is next to the 11 MW S Alam Power Plant in Ichapur, adjacent to Moizzartek of Karnaphuli Police Station. The production activities of the sugar factory are run with the electricity of the power plant.

According to company officials, a total of four lakh metric tons of raw sugar were stored in four warehouses of the mill ahead of the fasting month. After refining, that sugar is supposed to go to the market. Among them, one lakh tons of sugar in the No. 1 warehouse was burned.

As a huge amount of sugar was consumed just a week before the start of fasting, discussion is now going on about the impact it will have on the market.
