Brazil considers the role of the UN Security Council as ‘inactive’ regarding the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine. The country criticized it on the opening day of the G20 foreign ministerial meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. News from AFP
Brazil is the current president of the G-20 alliance. Wednesday was the first day of the two-day meeting. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also participated in the two-day G-20 conference.
On the opening day of the conference, Brazil’s top diplomat Mauro Vieira said that global conflicts have shown that international institutions such as the United Nations are not working.
He also said, ‘The unacceptable stagnation of the Security Council on the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine shows that multilateral institutions are not equipped to deal with the current challenges.’
Last Sunday, Brazilian President Lula Inacio da Silva said that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. He compared the Israeli campaign to the Holocaust. In response, Tel Aviv declared Lula ‘undesirable’.
