12 Palestinians drowned while picking up aid that fell into the sea

At least 12 Palestinians have drowned while collecting relief supplies dropped by planes in the sea in northern Gaza. Apart from this, six more people died in the stampede. The BBC report mentioned that the incident took place on a beach in Beit Lahia last Monday.

The Hamas-controlled media office said in a statement, “12 people drowned while going into the sea to collect food packets.” Six more people were trampled to death while collecting other relief packages that fell to the ground.

The statement called for an “immediate cessation” of airdrops of relief packages as “offensive, wrong, inappropriate, and useless.” In a video obtained by Reuters, Palestinians were seen desperately running towards the shore after relief was dumped on the beach.

It shows dozens of relief packages attached to parachutes floating near the coast. Israel claims that last Monday they arranged to send 159 relief packages weighing one ton to the northern part of Gaza. Israel is being pressured to allow more aid to enter Gaza by land.

The U.S. says two C-17 aircraft dropped 46,000 MREs on northern Gaza on Monday. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom says that 10 tons of water, rice, cooking oil, flour, canned goods, and baby formula were dropped on one of their A400M aircraft.
