Fawzia Karim is receiving the International Woman of Courage Award

Fawzia Karim Feroze, a lawyer for the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, is receiving the International Women of Courage Award from the United States Department of State. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs made this announcement on Friday night, ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8.

Fawzia Karim Feroze and 12 people from different countries are receiving the International Women of Courage Award this year. Next Monday evening, US First Lady Jill Biden and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will officially hand over the award to them in Washington, DC.

The US State Department said about Fawzia Karim Feroze that she has fought for the rights of marginalized communities for more than three decades. He currently heads his own law chamber and serves as chairperson of the Foundation for Law and Development (FLAD). Under his leadership, FLAD won a verdict on domestic worker protection and welfare policy.

Fauzia Feroze has personally filed nearly 3,000 cases on behalf of garment workers against their employers. She helped establish the Bangladesh Independent Garment Workers Union Federation (BIGUF) and the Domestic Workers Directive.

Fawzia Karim Feroze previously served as the President of the Bangladesh Women Lawyers Association from 2007 to 2018. He is a founding trustee of the Acid Survivors Trust. In November 2023, the Bangladesh Supreme Court administration selected Fawzia Feroze for its five-member committee to review sexual harassment cases and make recommendations to the court.
