India claims to have found the wreckage of a Pakistani submarine that sank in the Bay of Bengal in 1971. The wreckage of this Pakistani submarine was found near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
The Times of India reported that the submarine was recently spotted by the Indian Navy’s new state-of-the-art vessels.
According to the report, the submarine named PNS Ghazi sank in the Bay of Bengal on December 4, 1971 during the Liberation War. The wreckage of the submarine was found by the Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle of the Indian Navy. This vessel is used for deep sea rescue operations.
The Pakistani submarine that sank in the Bay of Bengal was earlier part of the US fleet. This submarine was used by the US military as the USS DiBallo. Later it was given to Pakistan Navy by America.
On November 14, 1971, PNS Ghazi reached Visakhapatnam after traveling 4,800 kilometers from Pakistan. India deployed the warship INS Rajput to destroy this submarine.
The wreckage of the PNS Ghazi is claimed to have been found just 2 to 2.5 km from Visakhapatnam, The Times of India reported. Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle of Indian Navy found this submarine only 100 meters under water.
There were 93 sailors on this Pakistani submarine when it sank. 11 of whom were officers. The submarine was sent to lay mines in the sea off the east coast of India. Besides, PNS Ghazi was tasked to destroy the Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.
