Nine children were killed in a landmine explosion in Afghanistan. The incident took place in the southeastern province of Ghazni.
Ghazni provincial administration official Hamidullah Nisar confirmed this information to AFP on Monday (April 1).
Hamidullah Nisar said the landmine was planted during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. On Monday, it suddenly exploded and killed nine children. Children were playing near the field where the mine was planted.
In 1979, the Soviet Union launched an operation in Afghanistan. That campaign lasted for ten years. Mainly because of that campaign, the current Taliban forces emerged in the nineties of the last century.
During the operation, the Soviet forces planted landmines, mortars, and various explosives in a wide area of the country. Most of them have not been deactivated yet.
