16 leaders and workers of BNP in the Naogaon explosives case

The court has sent 16 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations to jail in a case under the Explosives Act in Patnitala upazila of Naogaon. All the accused were on six-week anticipatory bail from the High Court.

Naogaon Chief Judicial Magistrate Judge Bishwanath Mondal ordered to send the accused to jail after appearing in court on Thursday (February 22) afternoon and asking for bail again.

The accused’s lawyer, Minhajul Abedin, confirmed the denial of bail. He said, “The court has sent all of them to jail. We will seek bail again at a later date.’

BNP leaders and activists sent to jail are Patnitala Upazila Youth Party Senior Joint Convenor Bayezid Raihan (Shahin), Najipur Municipal Jubo Dal Senior Joint Convenor Abdul Quader, Municipal BNP Convenor Committee Member Obaidul Islam, Municipal BNP Former Organizing Secretary Ramzan Ali Sardar, Akbar Union BNP General Secretary Abu Taher and Vice President Jewel, Patnitala Union Youth Dal Joint Secretary, Shahir Hossain, Najipur Municipal Youth Dal Joint Convener Sakhawat Hossain, Najipur Municipality Ward No. 2 BNP President Alamin Kabir Jamal, Najipur Municipality Ward No. 6 BNP General Secretary Mizanur Rahman, BNP workers Litu Fakir, Subrata Kumar, Jubo Dal activist Ujjal Hossain, District Chhatra Dal co-publicity secretary Rakibul Hasan and Patnitala Upazila Chhatra Dal joint convener Al Amin.

According to court sources, on October 28 last year, at around 8:30 p.m., Awami League leaders and activists were attacked and cocktail blasted in Najipur municipality’s Badpuiya area on their way home after a party meeting at the Upazila Awami League office in the Najipur Bazar area. In this incident, an Awami League activist named Bappi Chakraborty named 23 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations and filed a case against 40–50 unknown people under the Explosives Act.

In this case, those 16 activists got anticipatory bail from the High Court six weeks ago. At the end of the bail period, when they sought bail again in the Naogaon Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday, the judge rejected their bail application and sent them to jail.

Meanwhile, Naogaon district BNP convenor Abubakkar Siddique Nannu condemned and protested the sending of party leaders to jail and immediately demanded the withdrawal of the case filed against Naogaon district Patnitala upazila BNP and the leaders and workers of its affiliates and organizations and their unconditional release.
