Textiles and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak said that Tangail saree was ours, it will remain ours even if India takes Geographical Indication (GI) certificate.
He said this while talking to media persons at the secretariat on Wednesday.
India also published GI Journal on Tangail Sarees, we did too. No two countries can have GIs. When asked whether the government will take an appeal in this regard or not, the minister said, when we got it online at night, we sat down with the relevant ministries and departments in the first hour of the next day. The journal, which was published by the Ministry of Culture of West Bengal, India, was taken down later that evening due to our activities.
Jahangir Kabir Nanak assures us that we should have taken it earlier. We couldn’t take it. As we should have taken, those in charge of the district administration could not take it.
He said, we are taking the necessary measures now. We will do whatever is necessary from our ministry to establish it
