Maryam Nawaz, daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and senior vice-president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is set to become the new chief minister of the province. On Monday (February 26) this information was reported by the Pakistani media Geo TV.
The PML-N won the majority in the Punjab Provincial Assembly in the February 8 elections. As a result, Maryam Nawaz is most likely to be elected as the new Chief Minister here. If she wins, Maryam will be the first woman Chief Minister in the history of Pakistan.
According to Geo News, the Punjab Assembly session has been called at 11 am on Monday and it will be presided over by the newly elected Speaker of Punjab, Malik Ahmed Khan.
The PML-N currently enjoys the support of 224 MPAs in the provincial assembly. And the rival of Maryam for the post of Chief Minister will be Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Aftab Ahmed Khan. He has the support of 103 MPAs. The support of 187 members is required in the 327-seat provincial assembly to be elected as chief minister.
