Four people died in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India, due to Cyclone Kalbaisakhi. More than 200 people were injured. State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to leave for the devastated Jalpaiguri at night.
A few days ago, the Meteorological Department had predicted rain with thunder in North Bengal. Accordingly, heavy monsoon storms and hailstorms started in Jalpaiguri district today afternoon. A large rock fell in the Mainaguri area of the district.
According to the information provided by the locals, rocks weighing half a kilogram also fell. In just a few minutes of rampage, huge damage was done in several areas of Jalpaiguri Sadar Block and Mainaguri Block. A pedestrian died after being crushed by a tree in the storm.
Locals said that the person named Dijendra Narayan Sarkar took shelter under a tree during the storm. Suddenly, the tree fell on his head. The name of another deceased person is Anima Mondal (48).
Police said that he died after being hit by a battery operated toto during the storm. The other two deceased have been identified as Yogen Roy (70) and Samar Roy (64).
The chief minister posteda message expressing regret over the incident. In X, he wrote, “Sudden heavy rains and gale force winds caused disaster in the Jalpaiguri-Mainaguri area this afternoon.” People lost their lives, many people were injured, and houses were damaged. Trees and power poles are uprooted.
