Girona was flying in the sky playing fast football. The club was at the top of the La Liga points table at one point, ahead of Spanish giants Real Madrid. Even though he dropped to second, the title race was still going well. However, the team stumbled in that run as they lost 3-2 to Athletic Bilbao.
Girona are second in the table with 56 points from 25 games, despite suffering a second straight defeat in the league. Real Madrid are comfortably in the title race at the top of the table with a six-point lead from the draw. Third-placed FC Barcelona has 54 points. Atlético Madrid is fourth with 51 points. Bilbao, who beat Girona FC in fifth place with 49 points, are in a strong position to secure a ticket to the Europa League next season.
Alex Berenguer put Bilbao ahead with a left-footed shot in the second minute of the match at San Mamés on Monday night. Viktor Tsygankov equalized for the visitors in the 49th minute after the break. The hosts did not have to wait long to take the lead again. Berenguer scored a pair of goals in the 56th minute after taking the ball from Gorka Guruzeta’s cross.
Ghana national team striker Ikaki Williams increased the gap in the 60th minute by hooking the ball into the net. Erik García headed home for Girona in the 75th minute to make it 3-2. However, it could not prevent the hosts from winning.
