Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that India has promised to export 20 thousand metric tons of onions and 10 thousand metric tons of sugar to Bangladesh before Ramadan. I have requested Delhi to increase this number to 50 thousand metric tons of onions and 1 lakh metric tons of sugar.
The minister gave this information in a press conference at the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday after his visit to Delhi.
The Foreign Minister brought up the subject of the meeting with India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in Delhi on February 9. He said, we are dependent on India for many consumer goods. In particular, certain products like onions, sugar, pulses and spices. We depend on India for many things. I have discussed these issues with the Commerce Minister of India.
Hasan Mahmud said, I told him (India’s commerce minister) that a special quota should be set for these consumer goods. So that at least we can import these from them at the right price and as per our requirement. At least I can take this benefit from them.
He also said that they have already promised to export 20 thousand metric tons of onion and 10 thousand metric tons of sugar to our country before Ramadan. I have talked about increasing it to 50 thousand metric tons of onion and 1 lakh metric tons of sugar. He (India’s commerce minister) has taken it well.
