Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party PTI has announced a new program across the country to protest the rigging of Pakistan’s national and provincial assembly elections. The party will hold a protest program across the country on March 2. PTI said that other political parties will also participate with them this time.
National and provincial assembly elections were held in Pakistan on February 8. Independent candidates supported by former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party PTI won first place, PML-N second and PPP third. However, no single party could win a single majority.
Despite winning the most seats in the election, PTI has been complaining about vote rigging. The party claims that in many constituencies their supported candidates have been forced to lose by altering the results. Since the election, PTI has been holding protests across the country along with like-minded parties. The party has even demanded the immediate resignation of controversial Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja for failing to prevent election rigging.
In a press conference after meeting PTI founder Imran Khan, who is incarcerated in Adiala Jail on Tuesday, the party’s secretary general prime ministerial candidate Omar Ayub expressed regret for the massive rigging of the February 8 polls.
He said that PTI will hold nationwide protests against election rigging along with other political parties. Our seats have been stolen with just a stroke of a pen. People gave mandate to former PTI chairman. The nation’s mandate and our seats are under attack.
Addressing another press conference outside Adiala Jail, PTI central leader Sher Afzal Marwat said party founder Imran Khan had ordered protests across the country on Saturday (March 2).
He said that the internal issues of the party were discussed in the meeting with the former prime minister. The elected members of PTI will go to Parliament to take oath on February 29.
