The Houston Rockets reported on that longtime guard/forward Robert Reid had passed away at the age of 68.
After receiving cancer treatment, Reid passed away at home in Houston on Monday, the Houston Chronicle reports.
Reid played in the NBA for 13 years, spending his first 10 seasons (1977–82, 1983–88) with the Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Philadelphia 76ers. After the 1981–82 season, he stepped away from basketball for religious reasons, but he returned for the 1983–84 campaign.
In 919 games (366 starts), the 6-foot-8 Reid averaged 11.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.
He assisted the Rockets in going to two NBA Finals, when they were defeated by the Boston Celtics in 1981 and 1986.
“I’ve had the honor of knowing Robert for more than 40 years, and he has always given happiness and.
“My deepest sympathies are sent to his wife, Diana, and everyone who was close to him. Robert will be sadly missed, but his memory will live on.”
Reid was selected by Houston in the second round of the 1977 draft, 40th overall, out of St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas.
Reid is presently eighth in points (8,823) and rebounds (3,706), ninth in blocks (364), tenth in assists (2,253), and fifth in steals (881) in Rockets history.
